About a month ago I started running. This is the third or fourth time I've made such an effort in as many years. Generally I'll be very enthusiastic about it for a week or two and then slowly lose interest until I realize months have gone by since the last run. I've tried keeping performance logs and setting reasonably attainable goals but things never pan out. Enter this blog, which has been established not only to keep a record of my progress but also to provide a place to write extremely boring posts chronicling my self-improvement.
There are currently two sub-projects under the umbrella of ahook fitness. The first is a weekly 5k run (and for the time being partial walk), which is being tracked at ahook.net/prj/5k.php. Also on that project page is the second project, the weekly 1 mile sprint. The (perhaps obvious) goal of each of these projects is to complete their respective events as quickly as possible. My initial goals are a 24:00 5k and a 6:00 mile. If these are met, I'll push for 21:00 and 5:00, but seriously guys. how likely is that? (Not incredibly likely).
Finally, tonight I landed on a page about the United States Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test (USMCPFT) and have decided to bundle this into the plan as well. This test has three aspects: 1) a 3 mile run, 2) two minutes of crunches, and 3) pull-ups. A perfect score is: 1) 18:00 for the 3 mile run, 2) 100 crunches in two minutes, and 3) 20 pull-ups (not timed). Each time I run the 5k (which is essentially a 3 mile run), I'll also be scoring myself on crunches (which in ahookspeak would technically be sit-ups, but we won't question the marines here (semper fi)) and pull-ups (of which I can do exactly zero right now). I will note here now that the pull-ups will be executed using the hanger-bar in my coat-closet until an adequate replacement can be found.
Once I buy a bathroom scale, I will also be weighing the fuck out of my self every morning. The Ninendo Wii called me frail and I ain't having any more of that shit.
